Setting Up Your Jewellery Studio At Home — London Jewellery School

Setting up your jewellery workshop from home for the first time is one of the most exciting parts of being a beginner! Gathering all your new tools and organising your workshop, bringing your studio to life. The only struggle is knowing how to store all your new jewellery tools and equipment. Organisation is key when setting up your studio from home and I am here to give you some of my best tips for organising your jewellery studio.

Space

One of the first things jewellers think about when organising their studio is space! The best past about setting up your jewellery workshop is that no matter how big or small, you can make the best use out of whatever space you have. As long as you are storing your tools and equipment in the right storage boxes and cabinets, you will have enough space to create beautiful jewellery.

Jewellers Bench

Using a jewellers bench is a perfect way to take your jewellery skills up a level. It’s one of the most important pieces of equipment and will help with all your making techniques. One of the perks of having a jewellers bench is having good height. This is very important when making your pieces to avoid hunching over while working and avoiding injury.

Office Chair

When choosing a chair for your workbench, it’s a good idea to go with an adjustable office chair. This will allow you to adjust the chair to the height that feels most comfortable for you. As you will be sitting for long periods of time, I would recommend using a supported back chair. This will help if you struggle with any back issues and it also will help support you in your work. You can purchase separate back supports that can be added to your chair!

Pegboard

One great storage for your tools is a pegboard. There are many jewellers who swear by a pegboard for its great use and visibility when in need of a tool! The great thing about pegboards is that they don’t take up space on the floor or sides of your work space as they hang against the wall. They save a lot more room for your soldering and sawing techniques. They also look great on the wall and make your studio fit for a jeweller.

Multi- use Hanger

If you love the idea of using up your wall space, multi-use hangers are the perfect way for storing some extra tools and equipment. You can hang small containers and a little tip for creating a unique storage is to add small buckets which you can purchase in various colours

Magnetic Tool Holder

Another great way to hang your tools such as hammers, pliers and files, is to hang them on a magnetic tool holder. You may have seen these before in kitchens to hold knives onto but there also a great way for some of your tools! It’s also a very useful way to grab your tools when needed!

We’ve spoke about storage for your tools but how about storage for your ideas and plans?

Bulletin Board

A great way to hang up your ideas and notes is to use a bulletin board. You can purchase pegs to pin your ideas, drawings or inspiration up when creating your pieces. You can also create your own special vision boards!

Shelves

It may sound like more of the obvious one, however shelves are a great way to organise your jewellery books, drawing books, design books and notepads. There also very useful for organising your boxes and jars.

 Lighting

Getting the right lighting can be crucial to your jewellery making. Natural light is the one of the best forms of light however it’s also very unreliable and if you’re working throughout the night, you’re going to want to find the best lighting! You can purchase desk lamps that are adjustable to bend over your work. You can also purchase natural daylight lamps! For any small pieces of work, you can purchase a headband magnifier led light. These are great to see your work up close.

For all your beads, gems and in-betweens, storing all your small pieces sometimes feel overwhelming but don’t stress! I know how important it can be to store all your precious stones and small pieces so they don’t get lost!

Storage Containers

Storage containers are a great way to keep all your small pieces safe. Purchasing clear containers are a great way to see what is in each box and they also show off your beads beautifully. Using labels are also a great way to know what is in each box and this is helpful for any storage containers that are hard to see through

Jars

One of the best things about jars is that you can gather these from home! Jars from your food cupboard are great for keeping pens, small files and small pieces of equipment safe.

Decoration! One of the fun things about creating your jewellery studio is decorating it to suit you! Giving your studio personality and relating it to you creates an enjoyable and creative environment. Some tips to help you along the way are to use pictures for inspiration, colours and so much more! Feeling at home in your studio is an important part of the process to making beautiful jewellery.
